Tips on keeping a laptop in good shape?

I just got my first laptop, an HP Compaq CQ60. I have an HP desktop, and I like it, so that’s why I went with another one from the same family. Anyway, anybody have any tips to keep it working for longer than a year? I’ve read laptops die after a year or so and I don’t want to have to buy another one because I have 20 months of school, and I need it to last! Thanks!

for hardware
liquid + electrical devices = bad XD
keep it clean, don’t pound on the keyboard, make sure your fan can breath.

for battery
charge it up, and then let it drain all the way or close to it before charging again NEVER leave it plugged in all the time (unless your charging it over night or something) my mom did that (against my advice) and now it only lasts for 15mins before it needs plugged in.
put it on HIGH PERFORMANCE, i know it eats up battery faster but the fact of the matter is, your holding back your processor and RAM if you have it on anything less, and in the long run is worth it.

for software
DON’T ACCTIVATE NORTON TRAIL…UNINSTALL IT, with the removal tool from there site, and
get a good anti-virus program (like avast)
use anti-malware (like spywareblaster)
use a good web browser like firefox or opera (i like firefox myself)
get rid of the bloat-ware
turn off windows firewall and install zonealarm or comodo firewall (zonealarm is your best bet since you seem like the everyday user, comodo can be quite a handful and too much for someone who isn’t used to making there own policies and what have you)
MAKE SURE YOU BURN RECOVERY DISKS BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING unless you have an OEM disk or they where pre-made and packaged for you, after you make them (and are sure you won’t lose/damage them) you can delete the recovery partition giving you added space

for maintenance
defragment the hard drive
use ccleaner to get rid of registry errors/conflicts, and to delete temp files that will slow you down/release personal info
run check disk (chkdsk /f) from time to time to look for damaged sectors on your disk and recover them
use your avast (or whatever anti-virus you get) to scan for viruses and worms (after you update the definitions of course)
use malwarebytes to scan for malware and remove it
make sure ALL of your anti malware defenses are updated…even the firewall
update your operating system (most likely windows) and install the current service packs
